Karl A. Grice Elevated to College of Fellows

The 2017 Jury of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has elevated Karl A. Grice, principal architect at Grice Group Architects to the College of Fellows.  The FAIA designation, as it is known, is the highest individual honor given by the AIA and is awarded to architects who have made outstanding condtibutions to the profession and the communities they serve.  Grice was one of 178 AIA members around the country elevated to the College of Fellows.

Election to the fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of architects as individuals, but also their significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.  Grice has made a major impact on the architectural profession, and an even greater contribution to the communities in which he has worked.  He has been a civic champion in St. Louis and the State of Missouri, a mentor to a new generation of young professionals and has provided a model of the architect as a leader.

"Karl A. Grice has levereged his training in architecture and social work to understand, advocate for and translate into physical form people's deepest needs and aspirations.  His legacy of giving back to the community will continue through the youth he has mentored and the example he has set."

Out of a total AIA membership of over 90,000, there are just over 3,200 distinguished with the honor of fellowship.  The elevation to fellowship is conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership in the AIA in one or more of the following nomination categories:

• Promoted the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession.
• Advanced the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training and practice.
• Coordinated the building industry and the profession of architecture through leadership in the AIA or other related professional organization.
• Advanced the living standards of people through an improved environment.
• Made the profession and ever-increasing service to society.

The AIA Fellowship program was developed to elevate those architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession.  Election to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the achitect as an individual, but also honors before the public and the profession a model architect who has made a significant conftibution to architecture and society on a national level.

The 2017 Fellows were honored at an investure ceremony at the 2017 National AIA Conference on Architecture in Orlando, Florida in April.
